CNN —Skin cancer is by far the most common form of cancer in the United States, according to the American Cancer Society. As we head into summer, what do we need to know about the chance of developing skin cancer? In addition, those who are at increased risk for skin cancer should ask a dermatologist if they should receive regular skin exams. These include personal or family history of skin cancer, history of precancerous lesions such as actinic keratoses, certain genetic disorders such as xeroderma pigmentosum and history of immunosuppression. And it’s not only people who are fair-skinned who can have skin cancer; individuals of all colors, including those with brown and Black skin, can develop skin cancer.

2024’s safest sunscreens for summer and year-round

The annual report provides a database of products by brand and type, while also breaking them down into the top recreational sunscreens, the best daily SPF (sun protection factor) and the safest sunscreens for babies and children. Many of the safest choices will be mineral-based instead of chemical-based sunscreens, said Emily Spilman, EWG’s healthy living science program manager. Mineral sunscreens work by physically deflecting and blocking the sun’s rays, as opposed to sunscreens with chemicals that absorb UV rays and release heat as they break down. In 2019, oxybenzone was an ingredient in 60% of all sunscreen products tested by EWG, dropping to 30% in 2022. By 2023 and again in 2024, the chemical was used in only 6% of tested products, which included sunscreens and daily moisturizers and lip balms with sunscreen protection.

Merkel cell carcinoma happens when something makes them grow out of control. Merkel cell carcinoma typically shows up on a person’s face or neck or in other areas that are often exposed to the sun, like the arm. A Merkel cell carcinoma may be mistaken for a cyst, but cysts can be painful while these spots often are not. Because mineral sunscreens aren't absorbed, older formulations often had a greasy feel and a white appearance. People who do not like the thicker texture of mineral sunscreens often use chemical sunscreens in creams or sprays. The ingredients form a thin protective film that absorbs UV rays and changes their structure, converting them into heat before they penetrate the skin. Extreme heat also means more sweating, and sweat can contribute to itchiness and rashes some people experience from ingredients in chemical sunscreens, Radusky added. Even in the absence of extreme heat, people with sensitive skin should opt for mineral sunscreens, the AAD advises.

Many sunscreen ingredients that have appeared in foreign-made sunscreens for decades, favored by consumers for their ease of use, are still awaiting approval by the F.D.A. The ultraviolet-filtering compounds amiloxate, enzacamene and octyl triazone, for instance, have all been stuck in the F.D.A. In 2020, the global value of sun care products was $10.7 billion. Millennial skin care favorites — Paula’s Choice ($34), Glossier ($25), Drunk Elephant ($34) — have all created their own luxury daily sunscreens. “I think there is a more pervasive media representation of (the benefits of) wearing sunscreen, like preventing aging and preventing skin cancer,” Waldman said in a phone interview. In a study published in 2021, scientists found that more children in middle and high school were wearing sunscreen, a trend researchers partially attributed to social media. Meanwhile, young influencers on TikTok parade their multi-step skin care routines, with many featuring products like retinoids and AHAs, celebrated for their role in minimizing signs of aging.

Von Schuckmann said the jury is still out: “We certainly have studies to show that sunscreen used on a daily basis reduces skin aging. There are two types of sunscreen ingredients: mineral and chemical. In general, sunscreens are more effective at stopping the shorter UVB rays than the longer UVA rays. Sun protection factor, or SPF, only refers to how well the sunscreen prevents a sunburn, meaning how well it blocks UVB. When it comes to choosing the best sunscreen to prevent signs of aging, Dr.

Why Do Mosquitoes Like Me So Much?
  + stars: | 2023-07-03 | by ( Dani Blum | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +2 min
Mosquitoes seek out carbon dioxide (which in part is why they’re so good at finding us), and the more we exhale, the more carbon dioxide we send into the air, inviting bugs our way. If you were to do a vigorous workout outside, you might breathe more heavily and exhale more carbon dioxide, which might usher in mosquitoes, Dr. Potter said. Sweat sends a powerful signal to mosquitoes too, Dr. McBride added — particularly sweat that’s lingered for a few hours, mixing with bacteria on our skin. And if you’ve had a few beach-side beers or happy hour margaritas, you might also emit some alcohol in your sweat, Dr. Bazzoli said, which can lure mosquitoes in. Some fragrant personal care products such as certain perfumes and scented soaps and lotions (including sunscreens) can attract mosquitoes, Dr. Bazzoli said, so if you’ll be spending time outdoors when mosquitoes are around, try to use products that are fragrance-free, and consider skipping the perfume completely.
